79th Annual Academy Awards Filled with Hopes – The Hollywood Reporter
The Venice Film Festival, which kicks off the fall film festival every year – and thus the Oscars season – has always attracted many Oscar hopefuls. Indeed, in the past decade alone, four of the 10 Best Picture winners – birdman, Projector, The shape of water and nomadland – began their march to Dolby on the Lido, as did many other nominees and eventual winners. But the programming of 79e edition of the oldest film festival in the world – which will take place from August 31 to September 31. 10, and whose main competition jury will be chaired by Julianne Moore – is as packed with gold diggers as ever.
Netflix titles aren’t welcome at the only high-profile European film festival, Cannes, because the service won’t commit to giving them a theatrical release before releasing them on its platform. But that’s no problem for Venice, which unveiled The Power of the Dog and The Hand of God last year (the former won Best Director and the latter was nominated for Best International Feature). and this year awarded four of its 23 competition slots for films from the streamer.
Indeed, Venice will open with White noisethe last work of Noah Baumbachwho launched his last film, Marriage story (also a Netflix title), at the festival (Laura Dern won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). The Adam Driver/Greta Gerwig-starrer is apparently strong enough that the New York Film Festival will also open with the project. Netflix is also coming to Venice with bardo, Alejandro G. Iñárrituis the first feature film since The ghostwhich earned him his second Best Director Oscar (just a year after winning his first for the birdman); Andre Dominiqueit is Blondwhich is said to feature a knockout turn by Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe; and Romain Gavras‘ French language Athena.
