Rosamund Pike from I Care a Lot.

Netflix / Amazon Prime

If the film seems like a quiet year, it probably is. Box office topper F9, Godzilla vs. Kong When Black Widow It helped scratch that itch for a spectacular blockbuster, but what other movie got us talking?

For good reason, it is. So no Woman at the window It’s on this list. Oscar There is no doubt that this is a useful way to release a movie that has impressed you. Nomadland, Judas, Black Messiah, and Minari all came out earlier this year. They broadened our horizons and opened the window to a unique story that reminds us of the transformative power of the film.

and, i care a lot.. Simply pure entertainment. Here’s a list of CNET’s best movies of the year (released in the US). (There is no doubt that there are some obvious omissions, so we’ll continue to update it.)

i care a lot

Netflix

Two words: Rosamund Pike. Yes, she’s doing something that looks like the Amy Dan shade from Gone Girl. But her I Care a Lot con artist Marla Grayson is also memorable and doesn’t hesitate to steal money from the old man. I Care a Lot is inspired by real stories of professional parents in the United States and the legal loopholes they exploit. It moves at a steady pace and features the character in aviator sunglasses and an anti-heroine destined to be wrapped up in a crime count larger than the real thing. Every movie has to be this interesting.

The Mitchell family and the machines

Netflix

Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have some of the best strike rates in the game, especially when it comes to animation features. Mitchells vs. the Machines, for example To Spider-Verse But this is arguably my favorite animated film in 2021. Raya and the Last Dragon and Luka have been together for a year, and it’s no mean feat. .

Mike Rianda’s first director, The Mitchells and Machines, essentially brings an independent aesthetic to children’s films. It’s a little patronizing and cliché, but has the charm and wit to overcome worries about energy and delicacy. Good old Rick Mitchell Special .. He can be seen over and over again with many memorable sets and a one and a quarter million line. A board.

Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar

Lionsgate

Barb and Star is the perfect movie for 2021. It’s just pastel tropical nonsense. It’s also a great runaway movie when you’re stranded in Australia and don’t think you can get a cocktail on the beach right away. Dream Team Bridesmaid Kristen Wiig and Annie Mamoro write and appear as middle-aged women in this illustrious psychedelic acid journey out of the comfort zone, on vacation, in search of shine, and in a threesome with Jamie Dornan . .. sure! It’s ridiculous, cheerful, and has a lot of wacky twists that make it truly memorable. I’m sorry, but that’s all I can say without breaking the bank. You have to make it happen and you will have a great time.

Street of Fear: 1994/1978/1666

Netflix

I entered the Fear Street trilogy with very low expectations – and they all exceeded them. Fear Street is based on the RL Stine series of the same name and is aimed at teenagers rather than Goosebumps for children. These are fun, brutal slasher movies with incredibly good and tragic stories. Of course, there are some classic RL Stein twists that will leave you guessing until the end of Part 3.

If you want to know more about horror, or if you want to introduce this genre to teenagers (i.e. 15/16 years old and up), there are action and pants sex scenes that are not fun to watch with your family. ) I really recommend these movies! There are just enough horror and creep factors to leave you on the edge of the seat, but it’s still so much fun and silly that you won’t hide behind your pillow.

In the heights

Macall Polay / Warner Bros.

I love the musicals as well as the kids in the next play, but I think everyone can agree that the last five to six years haven’t been the best for the movie. In the Heights, however, it’s a movie version that I recommended to people outside of musical theaters, and it erases the memory of a nightmare (so to speak). Cat..

In the Heights adopted Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first work and features talented people (certainly). Not as representative as it should be) Cast while experiencing life in Bodega, Washington Heights. There is love, loss, drama, conspiracy, Piragua and a lot of great choreography. If you’re the type of person who loves Hamilton and vibrates with song, In the Heights will probably give you a kick out – and yes, Lin-Manuel Miranda Cameo.

No sudden movement

HBO Max

Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbor, Brendan Fraser and Ray Liotta wear hats. Fun and challenging from start to finish.

Coda

Apple TV Plus

This film about deaf children has a great soundtrack – and that’s to show us the otherness different people feel when navigating a society where they really don’t know how to include them. Use this music. Yes, I pulled out the handkerchief for this nice movie. It’s also about family coming together in a new way.

But I am very impressed and recommend this film as writer and director, Sian Heder, to connect the beauty and emotional power of music to people. How did you deal with the lack of sound? Both sides of Joni Mitchell, now when you’re all I need to go through Again and again from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – but when the musical experience magically hears how CODA comes up with these songs, I promise you .

Milkshakes with powder

Netflix

To be honest, they greeted me with Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett and Lena Headey. With a neon and chewing gum palette, this stylized action thriller isn’t exactly original, but it’s a lot of fun for those who don’t mind a lot of violence.

The protagonist of our story is played by Karen Gillan, a likeable actress who has mastered the Kick-Ass game as the adult Martha of Jumanji and as a nebula in the Marvel’s Avengers series. She will build these characters as Sam, a very successful assassin with a moral code that guides her to save the maiden from other hitmen. A valuable action movie usually has at least one battle scene. “Well that’s crazy but cool.” What Gunpowder Milkshake Offers: Sam takes on a number of villains after being injected with a temporary arm paralyzing drug. Well, it’s an elegant spin.

little things

Warner Brothers Pictures

My sister and I are big fans of Rami Malek. I had just got on board when she recommended The Little Things (a crime thriller starring Marek, Denzel Washington and Jared Leto). Little Things follows Joe “Deek” Deacon (Washington), a disgraceful former detective at Deputy Sheriff, and Detective Jimmy Baxter (Marek). When Deke notices the similarities between the recent murder and the unsolved case, the couple team up and begin a somewhat unorthodox investigation. Deke and Baxter return home to Albert Spalmah (Let), who silences the sheep and the zodiac sleuth.

The actors bring a lot to the table of Small Things, which lives up to its name in terms of intrigue. The contrast between Deke’s dark and disgusting personality and Baxter’s professional innocence and the double vision of good and evil sets the moment of excitement with Sparmae. Every moment is turned upside down by the volatility of LA in the 90s with startling conclusions.

Nomads

Cortesia by TIFF

Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland has won numerous awards at film festivals and, of course, won the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. Zhao is a true hard worker, directing, editing and writing this meditative and fascinating drama about a woman (Frances McDormand) who left her home to travel to the western United States. Understand this: Supportcast members are real nomads playing a fictional version. Watch this extraordinary film from the director who brings her unique lens to Marvel’s Eternals later this year.

Minari

A24

Minari played the role of Stephen Yun in a delicate and authentic portrayal of a Korean immigrant family trying to integrate into American country life in the 1980s. The Youn Yuh Jung Sweep Awards show definitely been seen correctly, ending with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

quiet place part II

Primordial

Listen. Quiet Place Part II It’s a sequel to almost silence, but we need to say more in the age of pandemics. The thriller, written and directed by John Krasinski and screened by Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy, is a thriller precisely crafted without maximizing the 2018 original. It’s satisfied.

-Richard Trenholm

Judah and the Black Messiah

Warner Bros.

Judas and the Dark Messiah made waves at the Oscars and won the highest supporting actor award among Daniel Kaluuya’s many nominations. It was well worth it. Kaluuya is mesmerized by Fred Hampton, president of the Illinois Black Panther branch, lighting up the screen with Lake Stanfield, who plays the FBI informant sent to infiltrate the party. to augment. The biographical and real-life dramatic events of the late 1960s are riveted, shocking and sizzling on the subject of racial injustice. A big and heavy film that requires your full attention.
