“Red Rocket”, a film starring Bree Elrod, who graduated from Topeka high school in 1996, did not win any awards on Saturday at the 74th Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera.

Still, Elrod said she felt deeply grateful to have been a part of this festival and film.

“What a wild and beautiful ride,” she said on Facebook.

The Topekan native told Topeka Capital-Journal on Saturday that she returned home to New York on Friday after walking the red carpet Wednesday at the “Red Rocket” premiere in Cannes.

“Red Rocket” was one of 24 films, including three from America, that were selected around the world to compete for the Cannes Film Festival’s highest award, the Palme d’Or.

An international jury of nine people led by American filmmaker Spike Lee handed out several awards on Saturday at the end of the festival.

The judges awarded the Palme d’Or to “Titane”, a controversial Franco-Belgian film for its scene showing the heroine having sex with a car.

In a moment of confusion at Saturday’s ceremony, Lee inadvertently revealed the victory of “Titanium” at some point before the winner was supposed to be announced.

“Red Rocket” was directed by independent filmmaker Sean Baker, who has been praised for his filmmaking techniques while creating independent works that include the feature films “Starlet”, “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project”.

Elrod’s performance on “Red Rocket” was described as “formidable” in a review by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Red Rocket” features Rex as Mikey Saber, a fast-talking con artist and stranded pornstar who returns to his hometown of Texas City, Texas.

Elrod plays Saber’s ex-wife, who was once his main wife in pornographic films and now lives with his mother in Texas City.

“Red Rocket” also stars actress Suzanna Son, who describes a 17-year-old Saber seen as potentially her ticket back into the porn industry.

Past highlights of Elrod’s career include appearing in 2006 in an Off Broadway one-woman show called “My Name is Rachel Corrie”, directed by the late British actor Alan Rickman.

Elrod was also featured in the credits when she played the role of a mental patient in the 2010 film “Shutter Island” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Elrod’s older brother, Carson Elrod, a former Topeka High student, also acts professionally. Their mother, Linda Elrod, is a professor at Washburn Law School.
