The musical is a remake of the 1982 theatrical classic starring Carol Burnett and the 1977 Broadway musical of the same title. In the 2014 version, the setting shifts from the Great Depression to the present day. Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Annie, with Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks. Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz also have roles. Diaz stars as Miss Hannigan, the headmistress of the orphanage. It was Diaz’s last film role before retiring from acting.

Unlike the original, reviews for the film were harsh, with critics disliking it. While the film was praised for its diversity in casting, with Annie played by a young actor of color, the screenplay received the opposite attention.
