Tanya Tucker/Brandi Carlile Documentary Acquired by Sony Classics https://carolchanning.org/tanya-tucker-brandi-carlile-documentary-acquired-by-sony-classics/ Thu, 17 Mar 2022 00:55:47 +0000 https://carolchanning.org/tanya-tucker-brandi-carlile-documentary-acquired-by-sony-classics/ “The Return of Tanya Tucker, starring Brandi Carlile,” a documentary premiering Sunday at the South by Southwest film festival, has had its worldwide rights acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, the company announced Wednesday. “I am thrilled that this special documentary has found such a perfect home with Sony Pictures Classics,” Carlile, who serves as both […]]]>

“The Return of Tanya Tucker, starring Brandi Carlile,” a documentary premiering Sunday at the South by Southwest film festival, has had its worldwide rights acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, the company announced Wednesday.

“I am thrilled that this special documentary has found such a perfect home with Sony Pictures Classics,” Carlile, who serves as both executive producer and subject of the film, said in a statement. “I don’t think there is a more fascinating human being on the planet than Tanya Tucker. I can’t wait for the world to fall in love with this legend all over again.

Sony Classics said the film represents “the birth of a major filmmaker in Kathlyn Horan”, the doc’s director and producer. Horan had previously worked with Carlile on shorter projects, including the 2018 short documentary “Brandi Carlile at the Washington Correctional Center for Women” and a music video from the same year, “Hold Out Your Hand.” Before that, she made a feature documentary about one of Carlile’s favorite artists, the Indigo Girls, in 2015.

Horan’s non-musical documentary credits include “The IF Project”, which focuses on how a Seattle police officer developed a writing project for inmates at a maximum-security women’s prison.

The Tucker / Carlile documentary largely focuses on the week-long production of Tucker’s comeback album, “While I’m Livin'”, in Los Angeles in early 2019. Carlile and Scooter Jennings served as producers of the album, with Carlile and band members Phil and Tim Hanseroth writing most of the material based on their understanding of Tucker’s life. The back half of the film depicts Tucker’s return to the road and his ultimate twin wins at the 2020 Grammys. Without intending to encompass Tucker’s entire life story, the film also includes a slew of archival footage. which Tucker and others provided for flashbacks.

The movie wasn’t one that benefited from anything resembling pre-production. horan said Variety in a recent interview that she was contacted by Catherine Carlile, Brandi’s wife, the day before the start of the sessions for the album. The filmmaker was able to hastily assemble a small crew in time to capture Brandi and her veteran heroine’s first in-person encounter the following day.

Horan’s TinFish Films is producing with Julie Goldman of Motto Pictures, Christopher Clements and Carolyn Hepburn, the team behind another recent music documentary, Todd Haynes’ “The Velvet Underground”, in association with Impact Partners and Artemis Rising.

Sony Classics said the deal was brokered with Submarine.

Horan said, “I am honored to be part of the Sony Pictures Classics family. I have always admired the caliber of their films. … One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the coming together of these two different worlds of country and American music. Tanya and Brandi are both agents of change in different ways, and the strength they represent and the joy they bring is something we are thrilled to be able to capture with this film.

Variety wrote in her review of the film, “It’s the season for people who enjoy flying recording studio movies, obviously, and ‘Tanya Tucker Returns’ is almost a bit like the anti-‘Get Back “in that he documents sessions where everything that could go well goes well. But the doc doesn’t get boring just because things get so nice. Carlile happens to be a really good Tucker interviewer, and it’s clear that the “radical empathy” she advocates in her own music and career is something she practices in real life…. The sidekick presses her hero for more details so Tucker can get in in touch with her emotions from life in the vocal booth. Or, maybe she’s just seriously fan-girling…but it works both ways.

Performers say music and film intertwine at True/False Film Fest | Central Missouri News https://carolchanning.org/performers-say-music-and-film-intertwine-at-true-false-film-fest-central-missouri-news/ Sun, 06 Mar 2022 18:30:00 +0000 https://carolchanning.org/performers-say-music-and-film-intertwine-at-true-false-film-fest-central-missouri-news/ COLUMBIA – While some might think of movies and filmmakers when they think of True/False, others might think of other art forms. COLUMBIA – While some might think of movies and filmmakers when they think of True/False, others might think of other art forms.

The main focus of the weekend is the cinema, but according to the True/False website, some have called it a music festival disguised as a film festival.

“Music is such an essential part of the fabric and energy of True/False – such an important part of the festival experience,” the website states.

Musicians play before and after film screenings, in the streets, and there are musical showcases every day of the art-rich weekend.

Drew Anderson, a member of local band Elephant Foot, said True/False is a film-based festival, but also a celebration of art and culture.

“Most people probably come to town to see the movies, but for there to be art installations and shows and parties and food, it’s just all of these cultural opportunities coming in a melting pot,” Anderson said.

He said if it was just a film festival it would be fantastic on its own, but having added dimensions makes it even better.

“I personally can only watch so many movies in a day,” Anderson said. “I think it adds a bit of variety, seeing movies during the day or in the evening and then you can see awesome music.”

Local musician, Sifa Bihomora, said the festival provided an opportunity to come together and share something beautiful.

“Having such a variety of films, such a variety of people, such a variety of perspectives, is so impactful,” Bihomora said. “And having that with music is so healing for people.”

Composer and musician, Angel Bat Dawid, said the festival and the music presented are enriching and necessary for the community.

“Music seems to bring people together and feels like a space for people to heal,” Dawid said.

She said people need these types of art now more than ever.

“These are tough times, the last few years have been really tough for everyone,” Dawid said. “I think we need it more than ever, the film is the music, to help people feel better.”

Dawid said the large involvement of music in the film festival makes sense because film and music go hand in hand.

“Music is vital for about 80% of the film, how do you know when the scream is coming?” Dawid said. “You hear the violins coming in. How do you know when the dramatic thing is happening? Boom boom boom.”

Alongside the final day of movies, final performances will be at 5 p.m. at Eastside Tavern and at 8:30 p.m. for “Busker’s Last Stand.”

Pune Int’l Film Fest: Pt Bhimsen Joshi turned ‘voice’ into tangible form, says Javed Akhtar https://carolchanning.org/pune-intl-film-fest-pt-bhimsen-joshi-turned-voice-into-tangible-form-says-javed-akhtar/ Fri, 04 Mar 2022 07:07:38 +0000 https://carolchanning.org/pune-intl-film-fest-pt-bhimsen-joshi-turned-voice-into-tangible-form-says-javed-akhtar/ “Bharat Ratna Bhimsen Joshi was the only maestro who showed his voice to the world. “Bharat Ratna Bhimsen Joshi was the only maestro who showed his voice to the world. When he sang, the voice was a tangible material form that could not only be heard but also seen,” said poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar. He was speaking as a special guest at the inauguration of the 20th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) held at Balgandharva Rangamandir.

“My statement about Pandit Bhimsen Joshi may seem exaggerated, but those who attended his live concerts would definitely agree with me,” Akhtar said.

The 20th PIFF, jointly organized by the Pune Film Foundation and the Government of Maharashtra from March 3 to 10, is themed around the centenary of the birth of three great personalities – Indian classical music maestro Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, filmmaker legendary Bharat Ratna Satyajit Ray and famous poet-lyricist Padma Shri Sahir Ludhianvi.

Akhtar noted that Ray’s films continue to be relevant as they represent the highest values of human life, dignity, understatement and nobility. He also spoke at length about Sahir Ludhianvi and Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar who passed away recently.

Praising the works of lyric writers like Majruh, Pradeep, Shailendra and Sahir, Akhtar said they should have been awarded the biggest prizes in the world like the Oscar or the Nobel Prize. “Sahir was one of the greatest lyricists in the world. His songs had the philosophy of the people and made a great contribution to society,” he said.

Recounting his experience of working with Mangeshkar, he said, “There can never be another Lata Mangeshkar in the world because she was the only singer who could sing the subtext of poetry. His voice sang the meaning of the words.

Akhtar also praised Pune as a city of intellect and art and pointed out that PIFF is one of the few film festivals that focuses on showing independent global cinema.

Veteran filmmaker and PIFF director Dr Jabbar Patel said the festival was popular despite the pandemic. “Even in the era of Covid, we received 1,578 films from all over the world. We will present 110 films from 65 countries throughout the festival. He said the festival received 100 Marathi films, seven of which were selected for the competition.

Speaking on the occasion, classical singer Pandit Satyasheel Deshpande gave an insight into Pandit Joshi’s contribution to Hindustani classical music. “India is known for the greatness of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, while we Indians consider him our pride,” he said.

Deshpande added that Hindustani classical music is the only music in the world performed by a solo artist with few properties or resources. Pandit Joshi never did fusion, never cared about the complexity of the notes. He believed in taking his audience on a journey of his ragas. “He was the only singer whose notes assured the audience, he always created musical drama and gave the essence of classical singing to Bhakti Sangeet,” Deshpande explained.

The inauguration ceremony included a medley performance titled ‘Krishna’ by artist Sharvari Jamenis who dedicated the performance to the late Pandit Birju Maharaj and Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. Dr. Ganesh Chandanshivey performed Maharastrian Gondhal folk music and Yashwant Jadhav performed the traditional Powada. Actors Shreya Bugade and Swapnil Joshi presented the inaugural session.

The inauguration ceremony was followed by the screening of the opening film ‘Neighbours’ directed by Mano Khalil from Switzerland.

Chairman of Akhil Bharatiya Chitrapat Mahamandal Meghraj Raje Bhosale, Secretary of Pune Film Foundation Ravi Gupta, Trustee of Pune Film Foundation Satish Alekar, Creative Director of PIFF Samar Nakhate and Committee Member of PIFF selection Abhijeet Randive were also present on the occasion.

For the past 24 years, ASCAP, the world’s largest music copyright protector, has partnered with the Sundance Institute to bring the ASCAP Music Cafe to the Sundance Film Festival.

And Loretta Munoz, ASCAP’s assistant vice president of membership, is thrilled the showcase is returning despite the coronavirus pandemic — it will be held as a virtual event alongside the festival for the second year in a row.

“We are just so happy and excited to connect with music and movie lovers and introduce them to the music of our amazing ASCAP members,” Munoz said. “The power of music is so strong, and to be able to bring the Music Cafe to the current form that it is now, which is needed, is great.”

This year’s lineup includes six-time Grammy nominee Brandy Clark; singer-songwriter and co-founder of punk band LA X, John Doe; R&B singer-songwriter Jordan Hawkins; singer-songwriter and actress Hayley Sales; Zimbabwean-American singer-songwriter and record producer Shungudzo; and Evan + Zane, a duo consisting of award-winning actor and singer Evan Rachel Wood and Grammy-nominated guitarist/singer-songwriter Zane Carney.

“We are happy to announce that John Doe is returning this year,” said Munoz. “He performed in person at the Music Cafe a while ago, and I’m a huge fan of X, and John along with his other bands and incarnations. He’s brilliant as John the author and John the songwriter and performer.

Munoz is also looking forward to introducing Clark.

“The stories she tells with her voice and her collaborations grab your heart and hold it tenderly,” she said.

The Music Cafe will also feature new artists such as Hawkins and Shungudzo, according to Munoz.

“Jordan is a handsome, up-and-coming R&B songwriter, and Shungudzo is a singer-songwriter and record producer,” she said. “She already has a long line of success, so having her first performance at the Music Cafe is super exciting.”

Zane Carney is known for his work in the Carney band, which includes his brother Reeve and sister Paris, Munoz said.

“I’ve known Zane for a while, and he’s a brilliant musician and guitarist,” she said. “So having him team up with actor and activist Evan Rachel Wood is pretty magical. I can’t wait to see them play together.

Munoz knows the power of music.

“It releases old memories and creates new memories, and according to an overused quote, music becomes the soundtrack to our lives,” she said. “For us to be able to do this virtually, that’s wonderful.”

In addition to the performances, the virtual cafe ASCAP Music Cafe will feature a program called ASCAP Screen Time, its film and television crew’s interview series that touches on the craft and business of writing music for soundtracks. and sheet music, Munoz said.

ASCAP Music Cafe will feature up-and-coming R&B singer and songwriter Jordan Hawkins this weekend during the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

This year’s entrants will include “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” composer Sharon Farber and film director Nina Menkes; Saul Williams, co-director/composer/screenwriter of “Neptune Frost” and Anisia Uzeyman, co-director; “Call Jane” composer Isabella “The Machine” Summers and film director Phyllis Nagy; the composers of “Cha Cha Real Smooth” Este Haim, of the band Haim; and Christopher Stracey.

Writing music for film and collaborating with filmmakers has been something ASCAP has been able to pursue, given the virtual platform, Munoz said.

“Over the years we’ve tried to schedule composers to perform at the Music Cafe, and that lends itself to a certain type of performance that wasn’t the best way to showcase those composers,” she said. . “So Screen Time will allow people to sit down with these composers who will share their experiences. To be able to put these composers and filmmakers on a platform in front of festival-goers is magical and enlightening, as there are so many ideas these artists can show for how music drives a film forward.

The move from the in-person Music Cafe to a virtual format first happened last year, and since then ASCAP has used the platform to host other music presentations, Munoz said.

“We’ve been hosting these events since the pandemic began, and the ASCAP team is at a high level to be able to navigate the virtual platform in a fairly seamless process,” she said.

Munoz also thanks the Sundance Film Festival team for ensuring that last year’s online Music Cafe went off without a hitch.

“If there was anything that needed to be changed on the Sundance side, they were right, so combining Sundance with ASCAP in our second year is something we look forward to,” he said. she declared. “Getting from a semi-in-person event to a fully virtual event in days is such a big task. We will therefore be on the front line with them on Thursday when the festival opens.

Yet Munoz can’t wait until ASCAP can create an in-person, “on-the-ground” Music Cafe in the future.

“I miss working with the sound teams and our colleagues at Sundance,” she said. “I miss the magic of the shared greenroom, where many artist collaborations emerge. So we’ll do everything we can to improve our digital experience, and we hope people enjoy it. »

Even in the 90s, the fertility and longevity of Wagner’s career was already a topic of discussion. “i was blessed“she shared in an interview in 1991.” People kept following me and the company kept recognizing it, “she said.

However, the actress has also opened up some of the more difficult aspects of life as a public figure. She says she was warned of the emotional traps of the industry early on and went into it with her eyes open, but still found fame to be a “balancing act.” ” hard.

“Losing your anonymity is a [sic] thing and you have to learn to live with it, ”she said while promoting Ricochet. “As strange as it may sound, it’s like losing a limb in a way – you’ll never get it back. And people have no idea what it is, that people are looking at you all the time. , watch every move you make every time you go out, “she explained. Wagner added that this is especially true” if you are shy by nature, which I really am, unlike most people think “.

Wagner has also found success in a less traditional acting format. In 2018, she signed to co-star in Death stranding, a video game developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kojima Productions, which also played Norman Reedus (The walking dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Annibal), Léa Seydoux (Blue is the warmest color), and Margaret qualley (Once upon a time in hollywood), among others.

Although Wagner has had a constant flow of acting work since The bionic woman wrapped up, she also had a career outside of Hollywood or at least next to Hollywood. Most recently, in 2013, she joined the faculty at San Bernardino Valley College in Southern California as an adjunct professor of theater and directing.

Wagner was also recognized for her work as a philanthropist. She received the Humanitarian Award at the 2018 San Diego International Film Festival for championing important causes through her work in the entertainment industry. On the red carpet of the event, she explained what motivated her to give up some movie roles in favor of more solidarity projects on impactful topics. “I just wanted to make films about social issues that we didn’t talk about – domestic violence,” for example. “Everyone in the dynamic is hurt,” she said, “Let’s look at this and be inclusive for everyone – let’s try to help everyone,” she said.

The UN and the United States demanded proof of Peng Shuai’s whereabouts on Friday, amid growing concerns for the Chinese tennis star’s welfare.

The player has not been seen in public since she alleged on November 2 that she was sexually assaulted by the former Chinese vice premier.

Tennis stars, sports organizations, governments and human rights activists have all expressed their support for the 35-year-old who said in a now deleted Weibo article that Zhang Gaoli had forced her to have sex .

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden’s administration wanted China to “provide independent and verifiable evidence” of Peng’s whereabouts and expressed “deep concern. About the world’s top ranked former doubles player.

The United Nations insisted that a fully transparent investigation be conducted into Peng’s allegations.

“It would be important to have proof of your fate and well-being,” Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva, told reporters. “We are calling for a transparent investigation into his allegation of sexual assault.”

Tennis players including Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic, the world’s best male player, also expressed their support for the Chinese athlete.

” It’s horrible. I mean, one person is missing, ”Djokovic said during the ATP final in the Italian city of Turin. “The whole tennis community needs to support her and her family and make sure she is safe and sound. “

Djokovic also backed the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) statement that she was ready to sever lucrative trade ties with China over Peng.

“If you organize tournaments on Chinese soil without resolving this situation it would be a little strange, so I understand why the WTA has taken such a position,” said Djokovic.

The former Wimbledon and Roland Garros doubles champion alleged that Zhang, who retired in 2018, “forced” her to have sex during a long-term relationship.

China has remained largely silent on the tennis star and on Friday the Foreign Ministry maintained its line that it was unaware of the controversy surrounding the player.

Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters that the case was “not a diplomatic issue and I am not aware of the situation.”

‘Zero tolerance’

Peng’s post was quickly deleted from his verified account on Weibo, China’s popular social media platform, though screenshots of the prosecution were shared widely. Discussion of the case has since been suppressed, with state broadcaster CGTN this week sharing an email purportedly from Peng to WTA chief Steve Simon saying she was “resting” at home and that the The assault allegation was “not true”.

Simon questioned the authenticity of the email and said on Friday that the WTA was at a crossroads with China and continued to make every effort to reach out and speak directly to Peng.

Prominent politicians, businessmen and artists also suddenly vanished from sight after clashing with authorities. Actress Fan Bingbing disappeared in 2018, shortly after this appearance at the Cannes Film Festival [File: Arthur Mola/Invision via AP Photo]

Peng, who represented China at the Olympics in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro, is not the first high-profile Chinese citizen to suddenly disappear from public view under unclear circumstances.

Jack Ma, the founder of the world’s largest e-commerce company, Alibaba, disappeared in October 2020 after criticizing government regulators in a speech. Shortly thereafter, a major stock sale by Ant Group, the group’s online payment unit, was called off by authorities at the last minute. Ma reappeared in a video in January this year, but did not mention her disappearance.

Fan Bingbing, a Hollywood actress who was a prolific user of social media, disappeared for three months in 2018. It later emerged that she was under house arrest while under investigation for tax evasion. .

Peng’s claims brought the #MeToo movement to the highest echelons of the ruling Communist Party in China for the first time.

“The Chinese government has systematically silenced the country’s #MeToo movement,” said Doriane Lau, China researcher at Amnesty International.

“Given that he also has a zero tolerance approach to criticism, it is deeply concerning that Peng Shuai appears to be lacking,” she said.

Dance with me (to be confirmed, 103 minutes) Directed by Shinobu Yaguchi **** ½

Shizuka Suzuki (Ayaka Miyoshi) is not a fan of musicals.

A serious young woman with big ambitions, the office worker at Yotsuba Holdings describes them as “strange” and “for idiots”.

Forced to look after her niece on the same weekend that she agreed to help big boss and office hottie Ryosuke Murakami (Takahiro Miura) with many papers, Shizuka belatedly decides to reward her young accusation for two boring days of imprisonment with a trip to Fortune Earth. After the latter opens up and voices her fears about her impending performance in the school musical, Shizuka decides the best way to inspire her is to visit the hypnotist at the temporary theme park. However, Martin Ueda’s (Akira Takrada) powers of persuasion turn out to be a little too powerful – and slightly misguided.

“Whenever you hear music, you won’t be able to help singing or dancing,” is a mantra that quickly becomes a nightmare for Shizuka. Hear every tune of a melody, mini-melody, or cell phone ringtone, and it uncontrollably bursts into motion and begins to sing.

Understandably, this quickly becomes mortifying and potentially dangerous to her life and career, as she is nearly whisked away by a bus, interrupts a board meeting, and virtually destroys an entire restaurant by faking elaborate routines.

When she is informed that she will need the original practitioner to reverse the curse, a desperate hunt for Ueda begins. But, as a traveling showman, he’s long gone, however, with the help of his disgruntled former assistant Chai (the hilarious Yu Yashiro) and ramshackle private investigator Yoshio Watanabe (Tsuyoshi Muro), Shizuka follows his path. track to the north.

What follows is a delicious road movie musical filled with memorable moments and quirky characters. Our trio find themselves caught in the middle of a gang war (and forced to dance to get by) and meet an abandoned street musician (a stage thief Chai) who has a cake knife – and a grudge. Along the way, we learn about the trauma (familiar to viewers of this year’s television comedy We Are Lady Parts) that apparently kept Shizuka away from lifelong musicals and became more and more invested in the search for the elusive Ueda.

Having made a career out of underdog stories (his 2001 comedy Waterboys became a television series that spanned three seasons), the seething story of writer-director Shinobu Yaguchi is a delightful and heartwarming film that surprisingly lingers long after the credits roll.

I saw this for the first time at the Macau International Film Festival in December 2019 and since then I have been looking for an opportunity to share it with my fellow Kiwis. It’s now available to stream for the next few days, free of charge, as part of a “sneak peek” for next year’s Japanese online film festival. If you’re a fan of Asian cinema, musicals, or just need a boost, this is the perfect weekend getaway.

Former Godzilla star Akira Takrada stars as charismatic showman and professional Dance With Me hypnotist Martin Ueda.

Radiant with charisma and grace, Miyoshi is an impressive physical artist (she apparently took 250 hours of dance lessons to prepare for the role) who also possesses excellent comedic timing, the finely choreographed numbers are a hoot and the songs eclectic. , many of them The ‘Eternal’ Japanese tunes of the 1970s and 1980s contain plenty of killer delicacies.

Offering a view of modern Japan – and Japanese cinema – not often seen, take this rare opportunity and Dance with Me while you can.

With romantic dramas Little nights, Little love and The Grand Passage, animated short Gox, the little fox and documentary Tora-san in Goto, Dance with Me is available to stream from the Japanese Film Festival Online until 8:59 p.m. on Monday, November 22 evening.
