When it comes to winning an Oscar, the key is usually a good story.

The young upstart burst onto the scene with a sparkling debut performance. The faded star is staging an unlikely comeback. The relentless actor of the method is completely transformed in the service of his profession.

While the decision of who wins often hinges on the arbitrary notion of “momentum” and who ran the most effusive campaign behind the scenes, many talented actors have often found themselves short – losing to a bigger narrative. romantic.

Sometimes actors have racked up a handful of Oscar nominations without ever winning once.

For every serial winner like Daniel Day-Lewis or Frances McDormand, there’s a Willem Dafoe or a Glenn Close: great actors who haven’t yet been honored by the Academy.

Here’s a list of every living actor who’s been nominated multiple times – but never won an award.

Glenn Close

Close is tied with the late Peter O’Toole for the record for most actor Oscar nominations without a win, having garnered eight during his nearly five-decade long career. While his last nod, for the tasteless of 2021 Hillbilly Elegywas never likely to win her an award, she was actually the favorite in 2017, for her role in Wife. The bookmaker’s favorite lost to real Favorite, however, as Academy newcomer Olivia Colman stole his thunder. Don’t expect this drought to last forever; there is the belief among many in Hollywood that Close is now long overdue.

Glenn Close pictured in December 2021

Amy Adams

For some reason, Adams’ career has become synonymous with the idea of the equally run Oscar. After breaking through with independent comedy-drama Junebug in 2005 (which earned her the first of six unsuccessful acting nominations), she went on to deliver powerful performances in films such as Doubt, The fighter and The master, but never won an Oscar. His last nomination was in 2019, for Adam McKay’s turgid biopic about Dick Cheney Vice — but at 47, there’s still plenty of time for Adams to finally get his hands on a golden statuette (or more).

Joan Alexander

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Alexander winning an Oscar must have seemed inevitable. The Massachusetts-born actor has been nominated four times in just fourteen years – for roles in The Great White Hope (1970), All the President’s Men (1976), Kramer versus Kramer (1979) and Will (1983). Will was to be her last nomination, however, and while Alexander remains a prolific TV and stage presence (scoring a Tony Award nomination as recently as 2020), she’s only appeared in three films since 2009.

Warren Beatty

One of the best multi-talents of the New Hollywood era, Beatty amassed a host of Oscar nominations in various writing, acting, directing and producing categories, winning Best Director for Reds in 1981. His acting was never deemed worthy of best gong, however, despite four nominations – and what might be his best performance, in Robert Altman McCabe and Mrs. Miller, was never even nominated. Nonetheless, Beatty still etched his name in the Oscar history books, playing a pivotal role in the infamous Best Picture of 2017 announcement mistake.

Annette Bening

One of the most notable actresses of her generation, Bening is someone many people would assume would have won an Oscar by now. This is not the case, however, despite his four nominations – with those in 1999 american beauty sweeping awards in several other major categories (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Kevin Spacey), it feels like a snub. Even more blatant of a snub was the decision not to nominate her for 2016 20th century women; her turn as single mother Dorothea Fields was one of the best of the decade.

bradley cooper

After making his breakthrough in bawdy comedy The hangoverCooper has established himself as one of Hollywood’s hottest men in films like Silver Linings Playbook, american hustle, American sniper and A star is born, all four of which saw him earn acting nominations. Cooper was also recognized by the Academy for his work as a producer and director, but never won. While turn in alley of nightmares wasn’t well-received this awards season, the movie itself is at least up for Best Picture.

Willem Dafoe

Another actor you might have thought would have already won an Oscar, Dafoe is known for his ability to wow arthouse audiences and Spider-Man fans alike. Of his four near-misses (Section; The shadow of the vampire; The Florida Project; At the door of eternity), it’s probably his role as a well-meaning motel manager in Sean Baker’s low-key movie. The Florida Project which stings the most; Dafoe was half supposed to win back then, only to lose to Sam Rockwell in Three billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

Marsha Mason

Actress and director Marsha Mason isn’t quite famous, but her string of projects from 1973 to 1982 earned her four impressive nominations: for Cinderella Freedom (1973), The goodbye girl (1977), chapter two (1979), and Only when I laugh (nineteen eighty one). Unfortunately, she didn’t win any, although she did win two Golden Globes for her efforts.

Ed Harris

One of cinema’s biggest curmudgeons, Harris has had no shortage of accolades throughout his acclaimed career. An Oscar is a trophy that eludes him, however; despite nominations for Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock and Hourshe always left the big night empty-handed.

Saoirse Ronan

Irish actor Ronan’s continued presence on the ballot has become almost a running joke among Oscar pundits. At 24, she had been nominated four times (for 2007 Atonement2015 brooklynand his two collaborations with director Greta Gerwig: 2017’s lady bird and 2019 Little woman). It’s not a stretch to assume that the 27-year-old will end up winning one of these days. And at the rate Ronan is going, she might even end up pushing Meryl Streep’s record for most nominations of all time.

Saoirse Ronan pictured at the 2020 Oscars

(Getty Pictures)

michelle williams

Williams is perhaps best known to the general public thanks to her roles in landmark releases like Venom Where The greatest showmanbut it’s in smaller and heavier movies (like Some women Where Manchester by the sea) that she really shines. Her Oscar-nominated tricks in 2011 blue valentine and 2018 Manchester by the sea both would have been particularly deserving winners; but his other appointments, for Brokeback Mountain in 2006 and for her turn of Marilyn Monroe in My week with Marilyn (2012), also deserved recognition for his craft.

Tom Cruise

While the later years of Cruise’s career were defined by high-octane blockbusters, he was once capable of nuanced performances. Her Oscar-nominated turn as a misogynistic pickup artist in Paul Thomas Anderson Magnolia might be Cruise’s best work yet, and sits alongside Born July 4 and Jerry Maguire as one of three nominations in total.

Matt Damon

Damon is another of Hollywood’s biggest names to never win an Oscar – despite coming close three times. In 1998 he lost after being nominated for Goodwill hunting (although it picked up a win in the Best Original Screenplay category). Subsequent appointments for Invictus and The Martian followed in 2010 and 2016, to no avail. Her starring role in last year’s superb medieval epic The last duel could have been an interesting candidate – but the film was entirely snubbed from the nominations list.

…and the rest

There are 13 other living actors who have been nominated three times without winning: Joan Allen, Johnny Depp, Woody Harrelson, Diane Ladd, Angela Lansbury, Piper Laurie, Laura Linney, Viggo Mortensen, Nick Nolte, Edward Norton, Michelle Pfieffer, Mark Ruffalo, Sigourney Weaver and Debra Winger.

Will Smith and Jessica Chastain also received three nominations, although both face the possibility of winning with their third. Smith is the current best actor front-runner for his role in the tennis biopic King Richardwhile Chastain is a strong contender for Best Actress for her role in Tammy Faye’s eyes.

Tuesday marks the start of Women’s History Month, a time to commemorate and celebrate the vital role of women in American history.

This is the perfect time to learn more about the powerful women who came before us: especially in science.

Now more than ever, we see STEM programs and opportunities for girls in science and math. But it wasn’t always like that. Here is an interesting piece all about the birth of Women’s History Month and why the United States has been celebrating (and making sure women get their due!) since the 1980s.

Below are 21 photos from Getty Images, showing pioneering female scientists over the years. Some of these faces can be recognized and some cannot. What a perfect time to find out more, this month of March.

Jamie Dornan is a very ordinary guy. Far from collecting high-end cars or wasting his fortune on luxury brands, his most prized possessions are a horse, five chickens, three goats, a dog and a cat. He could afford a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, but the actor and former model lives on a quiet farm in the English countryside with his three daughters and wife, actress-turned-songwriter Amelia Warner. After a few years of living through the hangover of the blockbuster Fifty shades of Greyhe now returns as the protagonist of Belfast, a new historical film directed by Kenneth Branagh. Some insiders are betting on a Free kick for the Oscarsand maybe he can shake off the series of tragic events that marked his life and that began long before he became Christian Grey.

Jamie was a happy kid. He was born in Holywood in Northern Ireland – not to be confused with Hollywood – and raised in a Methodist family, he attended church regularly until he was six years old. His grandparents on both sides were preachers. But young Jamie was much more interested in sports, especially rugby, than in the cultivation of his faith. He also showed an early interest in acting. At Belfast Methodist College he was an active member of the drama club. Even if he was not aware of it himself, everyone knew he was a star. This included her father, obstetrician and gynecologist Jim Dornan, who died last March of Covid-19 at the age of 73.

While her childhood was ordinary, everything changed in 1998. Shortly after her 16th birthday, her mother, Lorna, died suddenly of pancreatic cancer. “It’s something that affects you in a thousand different ways every day. I doubt that I will ever be able to accept this, unless I go see a therapist who can explain to me how. Maybe it made me more determined…I’m still very angry when I think about it. At my age, I am very frustrated that my mother is not there, because I have daughters that she has not been able to meet. It makes me very sad,” he said. EL PAÍS in 2016.

Then in 1999, Dornan lost four of his best friends from high school in a car accident. In 2019, on journalist Jay Rayner’s Out To Lunch podcast, he explained how the back-to-back tragedies had thrown him into depression: [those] things today, every day. I had this summer where I was going out a lot, I was drinking, I wasn’t really getting anywhere. I dropped out of college and was doing a degree in marketing and [had] no interest in any aspect of marketing, and I was like, ‘Well shit, I’m going to leave. Her two older sisters, Liesa (who works for Disney in London) and Jessica (a fashion designer based in Falmouth), staged an intervention.

modest man

Dornan Recount The Guardian in 2014 that he never considered himself particularly attractive. “I didn’t do particularly well with girls at school. I have always looked very young. And my sister’s friends always said, ‘You’re so cute.’ Damn I hated that. If you’re a skinny, baby-faced teenager, the last thing you want to hear is that you’re cute. His sisters begged him to disagree and persuaded him to enter the reality show Model behaviorwho offered a one-year contract with the Select modeling agency and an appearance on the cover of QG magazine. Liesa and Jessica thought a change of scenery might be good for him, but he didn’t win.

Soon after, however, he showed up at the agency’s offices in London on his own and was signed. “At 21 I was doing really big campaigns – it was huge – and I was making a lot of money, but because I never really saw modeling as a career, I guess I didn’t. let too much get to me,” he said. QG. Every time he went on a date or met a girl in a pub, he said he was a “landscape gardener or worked for Google”. Anything but admit that he was a model. He eventually started dating actress Keira Knightley, and they dated for two years.

Like The New York Times reflected in a 2006 article titled The Golden Torso, Dornan dazzled for brands like Dior, Calvin Klein, Armani and Abercrombie & Fitch because he looked like a typical young man who could go unnoticed in a crowd. “He’s like the male Kate Moss,” Jim Moore, then creative director of QG, says in this article. “Its proportions are a little off. He has a light build. It is rather small for male models. But his torso is long, so he looks taller, and he brings a laid-back quality to modeling. He knows why he’s there, but unlike a lot of people, he’s not trying to be a male role model. He’s not a model.”

And that was the key to his success. “I wonder why all this happened to me,” he told the American newspaper. “I don’t consider myself particularly handsome. The reason everything has worked out so well for me is that I don’t take everything too seriously,” he added. “It’s a great deal so far, a great way to make money and have fun. I attribute much of what has happened so far to luck and the right place at the right time.

He never walked the runway, but instead posed with a wistful gaze for some of the industry’s most celebrated photographers. “I’m sure there are people who dream about it, but not me. I did well and I respect that, but I always did it with a certain reluctance. Under no circumstances would I return to modeling,” he told EL PAÍS in another interview in 2019. This stage in his life would allow him to devote himself to what he had always dreamed of: acting.

The killer is looking for an interpreter

In the above Guardian article, journalist and writer Nigel Farndale portrays Dornan as popular, feminist and hyperactive by nature. We know that he usually drinks beer, opens a bottle of wine after putting his daughters to bed, and does not train at the gym because he does not gain a gram when he gorges on junk food.

His first real acting opportunity came in the form of a Sofia Coppola cameo. Marie Antoinette in 2006. But if there’s one character Dornan holds in high esteem, it’s the psychopathic family man Paul Spector in the British series The fall, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. “This show gave me everything,” he said. recognized in The Guardian in 2015. “I know that every opportunity given to me from now on is due to The fall.”

The beginnings weren’t easy as he had to prove he wasn’t just a pretty face. “In a way it benefits you, but in general it’s a big stigma. I’ve always found it infuriating that just because you’ve been a model for a few years doesn’t mean you can’t be an actor. valid. Especially in the UK. In the US, I would say they don’t care,” he told EL PAÍS.

When did the first rumors of a possible film adaptation of Fifty shades of Grey began to surface, the whole world began to speculate on who would play the protagonist. The first novel was universally criticized for being poorly written, but it was still a literary phenomenon. The toxic relationship between secretive businessman Christian Gray and shy student Anastasia Steele has revitalized erotic literature, a dormant genre for decades. Since its release in 2011, the first installment alone has sold over 165 million copies worldwide.

On September 2, 2013, news broke that Charlie Hunnam had been cast to bring Christian Grey to life. But on October 12 of the same year, Hunnam gave up. A few days later, Dornan agreed to be his replacement. The first trailer for Fifty shades of Grey racked up over 36 million views in its first week on YouTube in 2014. The teaser for fifty shades darkera sequel, reached 144 million in 24 hours in 2016. Dornan was well aware of the monster he was facing, and that from minute one the press would attack him without mercy.

“You know what you’re getting into and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about whether to take the fifty shades role. Most people hated books. And I’m not saying I don’t understand why these books were so powerful for millions of people, but you’re not going to have books that were horribly reviewed turned into films that will be critically acclaimed. he said QGadding that he had no regrets: “It hasn’t hurt my career to be part of a film franchise that has made over a billion dollars. Every working actor would say the same thing. It’s provided – a lot. There’s no shame in saying that it has transformed my life and that of my family financially.

He may play it down now, but in 2015 he was stung by some of the reviews that came out when the first movie was released. “One of them was ‘Jamie Dornan has the oatmeal charisma,’ which – some people like oatmeal, so I thought that was a bit harsh. I remember that it stuck with me,” he said Variety. Others said he had “the charisma of a hologram”. In 2016, with fifty shades darker and fifty shades lighter not yet released, he tacitly agreed with his detractors, declaring to EL PAÍS: “I don’t think I was right to Fifty shades of Grey. I’m sure it’s my worst performance to date. I don’t mind admitting it.

Although he said QG, “I always pay penance for this choice”, he continues to receive scripts. Like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (the stars of dusk saga), or Daniel Radcliffe (who will forever be haunted by Harry Potter), Dornan has built a solid career outside of Hollywood blockbusters. Now his performance in Belfast is destined for Oscar glory, according to Initiated. Soon, the guy who hated being a model may return to his farm with a golden statuette.

Like It’s us ushers in its emotional storyline in the series’ final chapter, fans grab their biggest boxes of tissues and cling tightly to their favorite characters like Tess Pearson, played by Eris Baker.

We got to chat with Baker about how literally growing up on the show has shaped her, embracing vulnerability, Tess finding her voice and what it’s like to film the final chapter of It’s us.

In the last chapter of It’s usthe Pearsons pull through as Tess’ grandmother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), suffers from Alzheimer’s, but we’ve yet to see how it affects Tess, which Baker says she’s expecting to find out with the rest of us.

Tess continues to have friction with her mother, Beth Pearson, played by Susan Kelechi Watson. The characters love each other so fiercely but butt heads, like mothers and teenage daughters do, “I love their relationship because it’s honest and real,” Baker says.

In particular, they clash over how Tess is treated differently from her sisters following her exit at the end of season three, which came to a head after Tess began dating non-binary Alex. . Baker says she takes the responsibility of playing a queer character seriously, “I’m only saying it was a challenge because I wanted Tess to be a good role model for others going through the same thing at a young age. Just this pressure that I put on myself.

In addition to It’s usBaker appears in the sweet Netflix series Alexa and Katie and shorts Cherry lemonade and Dispel. Baker is on a journey through entertainment as an actress, but she also hopes to work In the wings, from scriptwriting to production. To say she has big dreams seems like an understatement for the talented young actress.

What’s your favorite thing about bringing Tess to life?
Baker: This is a difficult question. However, I think I just learn to be vulnerable and to communicate. It’s something I struggle with as a person, so seeing Tess continue to open up to her family, especially Beth, has been a lot of fun. Definitely a teachable moment for me.

Do you think the actors and actresses you worked with on the show had an impact on the choices you made even in your personal life?
Baker: Not only did their characters mark me, but the actors have even more. They marked me as an actor and the different choices I want to make in a scene, but even more as a person. How to be kind and patient. How to make people feel welcome in large environments and how to live in the moment.

Tess, Deja and Annie are sort of a “big three” on their own. What’s your favorite part of the bond they share?
Baker: It’s funny because I told them that we should start calling each other the Big P’s (P for Pearson) because the Big 3 is already a thing, but our bond is just as strong. I love the connection they each have, especially in season six. We see them sharing more with each other and just further that on-screen link. I love that they can all go through individual issues but are always there for each other.

Tess’ story was honest, and we saw some really vulnerable moments from you; What has been the most rewarding part of Tess growing up? What was the hardest part of his life to film?
Baker: The most rewarding part of growing up for Tess is finding her confidence in who she is and finding answers to all the questions she needs to ask herself. The most difficult is always the most fun for me. I had to research the beautiful community she is part of. I’m only saying it was a challenge because I wanted Tess to be a good role model for others going through the same thing at a young age. Just this pressure that I put on myself. But it’s been so much fun reading stories, finding out how Tess’ story can be similar but her own, and generally learning with her.

Tess’ relationship with her mother was an eye-opening experience for viewers at home. How do you prepare to tell this story to fans who can come out and “change their expectations” with their own parents?
Baker: Working with Susan has been one of the best experiences I’ve had on the show. I love their relationship because it’s honest and real. A conversation about this topic can go either way with parents. But Tess was so comfortable but somehow terrified of telling her mother how she felt. I think what helped prepare me was honestly reading stories of people who have been through the same things. This fear of being accepted into a household is terrifying because home is the only place people should feel most comfortable. I think that’s what Tess wanted most – not to hide who she is.

As season six progresses, we are all reminded that this is the final chapter. We have been through a lot as a world over the past five years; sit to watch It’s us almost feels like a therapeutic experience for us back home – is the experience similar for the cast and crew behind the scenes?
Baker: I love that it’s therapy for some people! Everyone needs a good show of comfort. The cast and crew, of course, are aware that this is the final chapter, but I think it just makes us want to hold on to those memories more. The amazing thing about TV is that we can easily watch it again anytime and recall those memories that we never wanted to end. Doing this show, I believe, feels like therapy for the cast and crew. Everyone loves what they do and comes to work with a smile on their face. For me, particularly difficult days would come, but knowing that I have work tomorrow makes things 100% better.

What do you hope to see Tess achieve in Season 6? I know we can’t ask for spoilers, but if you could pick a specific part of his storyline to check out, what would it be like?
Baker: Already knowing what Tess will accomplish, I’m thrilled that viewers are seeing the more positive sides of her relationship with Beth and her sisters. She and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) have always been cool. The only thing I hear is “Beth and Tess don’t have a good relationship.” But they do, they’ve just had a few fights and hit some bumps along the way, but that’s with every relationship. These tough times shouldn’t define them, and I’m glad everyone is seeing the good side of it.

Rebecca’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease is something many viewers of the show can relate to. My grandmother lost her life to illness, and these last few years with her reflect a lot of what we’re starting to see with Rebecca. Will we see Tess struggle with Rebecca’s change in personality as the season continues to progress?
Baker: All my condolences. I am so grateful for grandmothers, especially mine, so seeing Rebecca’s story I know will affect many, especially people who share the same story as you. Honestly, I have no idea how she is reacting to her illness this season. However, they shared moments, and I know for a fact that she will be deeply affected. Annie and Deja included. So hopefully we can see Tess’ reaction and how she copes with it.

Tess is a character we love; what do you remember from this experience while playing it? Are there aspects of the character that have shaped your personality?
Baker: I hope to take away allowing me to be vulnerable. My dad always told me that if you keep pooling your emotions, one day you’ll explode. So playing Tess and watching her open up about her deepest topics taught me a lot and helped me be more open to communication. So I’m not going to explode one day, lol.

You can watch the latest chapter of It’s us on NBC Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. EST.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
